Of course, viruses and malware are bad. Protection and regular backups are always needed. However, to protect and recover from Ransomware is much more difficult. If you don't have the right backup systems and procedures, as well as the right procedures for recovering, you run the risk of losing all your data.
Ransomware is a virus that gets on your computer and encrypts your files. If you can't recover, your only other option is to pay the ransom to get your files back. Even then there is no guarantee those that are ransoming your files will give you access back to your data, or, possibly even ask for more money. The ransom can be in the 100s of thousands of dollars. Online backup systems and cloud-based systems, as well as standalone and networked systems, are at risk.
If you get hit with Ransomware, get the right help. The best protection is the right utilities that protect your systems. Even with these utilities though, there can still be a chance you will get infected. The best protection is the proper backup systems and procedures.
